About

Songs from a long way around.

Matt learned guitar under the stairs at his family's home in central Arkansas, on a flamenco guitar behind a curtain of coats. There was an old Kimball piano too, that always sparked his curiosity. But he didn't find songwriting until later.

He moved to Texas and started writing songs. A master's in theology led to a PhD in textual criticism, studying biblical manuscripts in England, then an academic post in Eastern Europe, where he busked on the street, opened the occasional festival, and started making his own records — writing, engineering, and producing the songs himself.

The songs are story and lyric-driven, in the tradition of George Strait, Waylon Jennings, Keith Whitley, John Prine, and Townes Van Zandt. His sound is intentionally acoustic, with the traditional sentimentality of pedal steel and fiddle.

Matt currently lives in Nashville, where he writes and records, trying to break into a regular touring schedule without compromising the authenticity that brought him to town.
